Quiche!– Updated and corrected!

Interestingly  enough, quiches are not from where everyone assumes. When I first heard the word quiche I was sure it was French, but I was very wrong. Quiches actually come from England. In the early 14thcentury the English were already baking custards inside pastries which is a quiche. You can even find recipes for them in 15th century cookbooks. How cool!

Other than loving its history, quiche is  one of my favorite foods. I love that you can do so many things with such a simple dish. On the other hand quiches are expensive to buy, and making it yourself can seem daunting at times. To make a quiche, you need to plan ahead. You need to buy the dough and freeze it and think in the morning that that’s what you want to have for dinner. I know, I know; it is so irritating. But no one ever said you had to buy the dough. No one ever said you had to buy your quiche at a bakery. I am telling you that you can make it so easily from ingredients you already have in your kitchen in under 10 minutes without making a big mess. So do you want to be able to say you made this quiche from scratch?

All right! This is a really easy fast recipe. So remember if you blink it will be over! Here goes…

You will need for a 9″ inch pie crust:

Dough:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • A tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/4 cup oil

Combine the flour and salt in a medium size bowl and mix with a fork, then set aside. In a cup combine the oil and water. It is very important the water must be cold! Mix the water and oil until it’s thick.

Then add it to your flour mixture and begin mixing with your fork until you see that it’s becoming comfortable to mix by hand. Knead the dough for a few moment and then take you pie pan and roll the dough out. You can use a rolling pin and then place it in your pie pan. And believe it or not your dough is done!

Told you not to blink!

Now for the filling… So really you can do whatever you want, but my mom requested that I make a sweet potato quiche, so I will demonstrate with this one write down my ideas for some more.

What you will need:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 Milk
  • 100 grams Emek cheese
  • Allspice
  • Cinnamon
  • Pepper

This would be the time to pre-heat your oven to 200c or 400f. In a mixing bowl add the milk, eggs and spices and with the help of a whisk, whip them together until foamy.

Once that’s done set aside. Slice your cheese into small cubes and spread them out onto you dough. Now you are going to peal your sweet potatoes and slice them into circles.

Take a sauce pan and sauté the sweet potatoes with the spice until softened. Then  you are going to spread them out on your dough. Take your milk and eggs mixture whip it a little more and then pour it over the top  of your cheese and vegetable. And that’s all it takes. Pop it in your oven for 30-40  minutes and its ready to be eaten!
